Trademark '021' proves a bonanza

A MAN from southwestern China's Guizhou Province is now the owner of a registered trademark the same as Shanghai's calling code "021," which was estimated by a Beijing firm to be worth 88 million yuan (US$12.89 million).

Zhu Guojian from Guizhou's Qiandongnan Prefecture told the Guiyang Evening News yesterday he planned to auction the trademark at this year's China Trademark Festival in Qingdao, Shandong Province, in November.

Zhu started to register trademarks in 1996 and then sell them after the applications were approved by authorities. He thought the calling codes of major cities, such as Shanghai and Beijing, were significant geographic symbols and could be registered as trademarks.

He applied for the registration of "021" as a trademark for tobacco products and matches in 2006 and had it approved this year.

And buyers are interested.
