Traffic accident kills 10 in Xinjiang

At least 10 people were confirmed dead in a bus-van collision today in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, local authorities said.

The accident happened at around 8:30 am in a crossroad about 73 km away from Karamay city, leaving nine passengers on the van and the bus driver dead at the scene, according to the city fire control department.

Both vehicles overturned and veered off the road after the accident, as both drivers failed to brake their vehicles.

Nine of the 14 people aboard the van, which was seriously deformed, and the bus driver were killed on the spot. Both vehicles were carrying cotton-picking workers who were returning home after finishing their job in Xinjiang.

An unidentified number of passengers were injured and hospitalized, according to the rescuers.

A total of 47 passengers were on the bus while another 14 were carried by the van when the accident took place. Both vehicles were overloaded, initial investigation showed.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
