Traffic bureau in Beijing denies director probed

BEIJING police dismissed allegations yesterday that the director of the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau is being investigated for violating Party discipline.

Economy & Nation Weekly yesterday reported accusations that Song Jianguo abused his power and cheated in the city's car plate lottery, which offers no more 20,000 tags per month but has more than 1 million applicants.

Beijing police denied the allegations, saying "the information was not true."

Some netizens said they were not convinced that Song wasn't working with someone named Liu Xuemei to cheat. The name made headlines after it was identified as the winner for seven consecutive months in the city's lottery system.

According to People's Daily, Liu Xuemei, in her 30s, is deputy director of the vehicle and driver management department of the Ministry of Public Security. She is in charge of drafting rules and issuing licenses. Liu and the Beijing Transportation Commission have denied any wrongdoing. The winners just have the same names, they said.
