Traffic cops allowed to wear masks in Ji'nan

In response to the call of many netizens, traffic police in Ji'nan, capital of Shandong Province, became the first in the country to wear gauze masks to ward off auto fumes and city smog.

Ji'nan police announced on its official website today that traffic police are equipped with gauze masks when they are on duty in smoggy weather.

An officer with the Shizhong District traffic police team said they purchased gauze masks with their own income, according to a report on dzwww.com.

Pictures showed police officers wearing A-shaped gauze masks while patrolling the streets.

Days of hazardous smog has made 37 percent of Ji'nan traffic police sick with respiratory problems, the officials said.

In the worst-hit city of Beijing, some celebrities launched an online campaign yesterday to draw public attention to the health of outdoor workers.

Shanghai Daily conducted an online poll on Weibo.com and 86 percent of respondents voted in support of a proposal to let traffic policemen to wear masks.
