Traffic tops list of concerns for Chinese
MORE than 75 percent Chinese said they consider traffic the most important factor in creating livable cities.
A survey conducted by China Youth Daily and published in yesterday’s edition, found that more than 85 percent of the 2,003 people surveyed were concerned about building livable cities. Besides transportation, they also stressed on a clean environment and safe communities.
Nearly 60 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with the living conditions in their cities. About 14 percent said they were not happy.
Air quality and traffic congestion were among their biggest complaints. They also wanted improvements in the drinking water quality, housing and public health conditions. The respondents also wished for better shopping amenities, medical services and education.
For the urban working class, personal development and career opportunities were among the most important concerns. Daily stress affected their feelings about urban livability, the newspaper quoted Lu Bin, professor at the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University, as saying.
Lu said cities should be designed better and industries need to be adjusted for green development.
