Tragedy averted as police stop crammed school bus

POLICE in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province stopped an overloaded school bus yesterday afternoon and found 57 pupils crammed in the bus with a maximum capacity for 39 passengers.
Only one adult was on the bus to take care of these schoolchildren. Police seized the bus and revoked the driver's license, Xi'an Evening Post reported today.
A senior police officer, Gao Fan, spotted this rickety school bus around 4:50pm and found each seat had almost three children who were playing noisily, totally unaware of potential risks.
The bus was stopped just hours after an overloaded kindergarten coach was rammed by a heavy truck in neighboring Gansu Province, leaving 20 preschoolers dead and 44 injured, 12 of them seriously.
