Tragic boy’s dying wish to save mother
A 7-YEAR-OLD boy’s final wish to donate a kidney to save his seriously ill mother was granted by doctors yesterday after the child died of a brain tumor.
The transplant was carried out at Tongji Hospital in Jingzhou City in the central province of Hubei at 10am, less than six hours after Chen Xiaotian died, cnhubei.com reported.
This was the province’s first case of an organ donation between immediate family members, the report said.
Doctor Chen Gang said the operation transplanting the left kidney was a success.
Chen Xiaotian’s mother, who had suffered renal failure and required a transplant, should now make a full recovery.
Chen Gang said she should be able to leave intensive care within a week.
Two other people also received the gift of life from the boy.
A 21-year-old woman received the little boy’s right kidney while his liver was donated to a 27-year-old man.
Both those transplants also took place yesterday.
Chen Xiaotian was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of five.
He went blind at the beginning of this year when the tumor pressed against his optic nerve.
His grandmother had suggested that one of his kidneys could be donated to his mother.
The boy’s mother at first strongly opposed the idea but he insisted on saving her life, according to the report.
