Train crash victim family accepts compensation

The family of a victim killed in Saturday's bullet train crash in coastal Zhejiang Province has agreed to take a compensation of 500,000 yuan (US$77,613) today.

The family of the victim, Lin Yan, is the first family to sign a compensation deal with the government of Wenzhou City where the accident occurred. But other compensation packages have not been revealed yet.

The death toll from the crash has remained at 39. So far, all 39 bodies have been identified, local authorities said.

The Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai has confirmed that it found the body of Ms. Assunta Liguori, an Italian citizen born in Naples in May 1989 who boarded the derailed train. Her family is en route to Wenzhou for body identification.

The United States Embassy in Beijing confirmed yesterday that two American citizens had died in the crash. They were Chinese-Americans.

The wrecked train carriages were cut apart and transported to the Wenzhou West Railway Station last night for further investigation.

The deadly accident happened around 8:30pm on Saturday when train D301 rear-ended the stopped train D3115, causing four carriages of the moving train to fall off the viaduct.
