Train staff smoking in carriage come under flak
PUBLIC criticism flared up again after a Weibo microblog revealed that passengers on a Shanghai-Beijing bullet train found the crew members were smoking in the carriage.
Just about an hour before Train G164 arrived in Beijing last night, some passengers saw four crew members were smoking in a vacant carriage and the smoke wafted into their carriage. They then had a dispute with a conductor over illegal smoking.
Hearing their quarrel, the train's chief conductor came and apologized to the passengers, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
A passenger who refused to be named said a 57-year-old smoker first apologized to them for breaking the anti-smoking rule, followed by his co-workers. But the passenger said he still felt angry.
"This was not an isolated incident. It showed these railway workers did not heed the safety rules and perform their duty," he said.
A similar incident occurred on August 6, also involving crew members on the Shanghai-Beijing bullet train. A middle-aged woman spotted a train employee smoking in the corridor between two carriages. He later apologized and said he wanted to some refreshment as he had worked 23 hours non-stop.
