Train trip to Tibet costs US$10,000
A LUXURY train journey costing US$10,000 per person from Beijing to Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, is expected to launch this year, a Tibet tourism official said.
Each train will carry a maximum of 108 passengers on the seven-day trip and each cabin will have its own bathroom and lounge, People's Daily reported yesterday.
Tickets have to be booked in advance, Liao Lisheng, an official with the Tibet Tourism Bureau, told the Beijing-based newspaper.
More tourists have chosen to drive to Tibet via highways while airlines have increased flights to Lhasa to meet the demand during peak season, according to Liao.
China invested 350 million yuan (US$53 million) in Tibet's tourism infrastructure during the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010).
Thirty projects, including tourist service centers in Lhasa and Shannan, have been completed or are still under construction.
