Training institute probe

EDUCATION authorities in Chongqing have launched a probe into an alleged illegal training institute after a couple said their son did worse on exams after they spent 285,000 yuan (US$45,000) to send him to the One to One institute.

After going to One to One, Zheng Wei, 17, only got one point on a biology exam.

The couple sent Zheng to One to One in September after his mother Gong Huaqun saw a promotional brochure claiming its special program guaranteed a good performance on the national college entrance examinations, Chongqing Economic Times reported yesterday.

Gong paid for a program covering six subjects including math, English and biology. The boy was tutored five days a week beginning in September. But at the final exams for the semester this week, Zheng finished near the bottom of his class, the report said.

Gong then asked One to One for a full refund, accusing it of publishing false statements. One to One declined. Education authorities found in an initial investigation that One to One doesn't have a license.
