Train-ticket scalping: 1,083 arrested

RAILWAY police have arrested 1,083 people suspected of train-ticket scalping in 1,013 cases nationwide involving 196 gangs, the public security bureau of the Ministry of Railways said yesterday.

Railway police say they have implemented stronger supervision over sales around ticket windows as well as booking outlets.

They have also focused on railway stations in tourism cities and uncovered numerous cases through tips provided by travelers.

Police said ticket touts hire people to queue at counters and buy tickets for them. They have also engaged in Internet fraud, police said.

A railway rush began yesterday in anticipation of the National Day holiday, when 69 million passengers are predicted to use trains over the 10-day travel period, said the Ministry of Railways.
