YANG Yumin, a farmer from the suburbs of Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilong掳?jiang Province, has been living with a transplanted heart for 17 years.

Yang, 51, is the longest survivor of a heart transplant in China. A celebration was organized yesterday at the No. 2 Clinical Hospital attached to Harbin University of Medical Science, where the operation was performed.

Yang contracted ectatic myocarditis in 1989. Before the operation he could neither walk, sit nor lie down, and was at risk of heart failure.

Xia Qiuming performed the transplant on April 26, 1992. More than 100 doctors worked together, and Yang received 1,000 stitches.

Yang now has a 16-year-old daughter and operates a small catering business inside the hospital canteen.
