Traveler restores China’s image
A PASSENGER went some way to restoring the image of China’s air travelers over Christmas when she came to the aid of a sick Thai air steward.
Qu Yan, a retired doctor from south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, was on Orient Thai Airlines flight OX619 from Nanning to Bangkok on Christmas Day when flight staff asked if there was someone with experience of emergency medical treatment.
Qu, 58, immediately volunteered to help.
A male Thai flight attendant had suffered sudden severe abdominal pain and cabin crew had delayed take-off to give him treatment.
Qu diagnosed the attendant was suffering from a urethral convulsion caused by kidney stones.
The flight took off after she told the crew that the steward, whose vital signs had recovered, could get the treatment he needed when they landed in Bangkok. During the three-hour trip, Qu massaged ointment on the attendant’s abdomen to ease his pain.
The attendant rapidly improved and could walk down the passageway unassisted by the time the flight landed.
You Dongjie, a journalist from Sing Sian Yer Pao Daily, a Chinese newspaper in Thailand, witnessed the incident and put a story online.
It drew thousands of comments praising Qu’s efforts.
“She has done a really good job. As a passenger on the same flight who witnessed the whole process, I think she has been a great role model for Chinese people,” was one comment.
Recent scandals involving Chinese tourists has tainted the country’s image abroad.
On December 11, four Chinese passengers caused chaos on an AirAsia flight. One of them poured a bowl of noodles full of hot water on a flight attendant, forcing the aircraft to return to Thailand. Days later, there was a fight among several Chinese passengers on a flight from Chongqing to Hong Kong.
