Travellers flock to quake areas

TOURISM boomed in southwest China's quake-hit Sichuan Province during the seven-day Lunar New Year holiday despite sharp falls in temperatures.

The province received 19.38 million tourists from February 13-19, a rise of 17 percent on last year. The province's tourist income increased 23.8 percent to 5.8 billion yuan (US$852 million), said a Sichuan Tourism Administration official.

Tourists were attracted by the looks of newly reconstructed areas, the official said.

Other areas in the quake-stricken province are also experiencing a tourist boom. Six seriously hit areas, including Chengdu, Deyang, Mianyang, Guangyuan, Ya'an and Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, welcomed 8.16 million tourists during the holiday, up 14.5 percent on last year.

Total tourist income rose 26.7 percent over last year to reach 2.3 billion yuan (US$338 million), the official said.
