Trial over New Year killing of five

A MAN went on trial today in Beijing for killing five people including a seven-month-pregnant woman and his own girlfriend.

Zhang Wei, 31, faced manslaughter charges at Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court, China News Service reported. He admitted the killings.

Prosecutors told the court that Zhang drank a mixture of spirits, red wine and beer on December 31 last year to celebrate New Year's Eve with his girlfriend surnamed Zhang and his friend surnamed Shen.

Soon a quarrel broke out between the two men and Zhang lost control after drinking too much. He led Shen to his home in Beijing's Daxing District and used a knife to stab Shen, who died due to blood loss.

To conceal the crime, Zhang also stabbed his girlfriend, who screamed after seeing the blood.

He then went to Shen's home and killed Shen's parents and wife, who was seven months pregnant.

Zhang called police to surrender himself.

The court didn't announce a verdict today.

Last year the district saw two other bloodbaths. In December, a 38-year-old man also surnamed Zhang knifed his wife and 10-year-old son at home. He dipped in their blood and wrote "For the people" on the wall before surrendering to police.

On November 23, 29-year-old Li Lei killed his parents, sister, wife and two children due to "accumulated resentment."
