Trial over rigged cheap housing draw

TWO workers have begun a trial for organizing a fraudulent scheme in a draw for government-backed cheap homes in a central China city.

Liu Shengjun and Chen Tiancheng, both temporary workers with Wuhan State Land and Housing Measurement Center, are accused of taking 760,000 yuan (US$111,322) in bribes and planting a software bug in the government's computer system to help cheat in the draw for cheap housing, today's China National Radio reported.

They are standing trial today in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, with another nine people involved in the scheme.

A total of 5,141 qualified low-income families took part in a draw on June 12 last year organized by the city government for cheap apartments.

But suspicions were aroused when six of the 124 winners had consecutive application numbers, which mathematicians said was almost impossible.

All shared neighboring addresses in Qiaokou District. A government inquiry found officials in the police, residence management and neighborhood committee had been involved in the scandal.

Five officials, including Zhu Zhiqiang, vice director of the Wuhan State Land and Housing Administrative Bureau, were sacked.
