Trial run for panda census
CHINA is to launch a trial run for its fourth national panda census and their number is expected to be higher than the 1,596 pandas counted ten years ago, China National Radio reported yesterday.
The trial survey of the panda population will take place in Wanglang Nature Reserve in southwest China's Sichuan Province, with 70 trackers taking part. The experience obtained from the trial in Wanglang will be applied to other nature reserves across the country, said the State Forestry Administration, organizer of the census.
Besides traditional methods such as excrement analysis, DNA profiling of panda poop will be used to identify each panda in some key areas, Chen Youping, legal representative of Wanglang reserve was quoted as saying.
The fourth census, kicking off in July, will also study pandas' living conditions, age structure and habit changes.
The census is also expected to reveal whether the devastating earthquake which struck Sichuan and neighboring provinces in 2008 forced the giant pandas to move to other areas or posed a threat to their living conditions.
The last census conducted from 1999-2000 found 1,596 giant pandas in China, with 1,206 living in Sichuan.
