Trial told of cold shower that led to death
THE former head of a re-education center in central China has gone on trial for forcing an inmate to take a cold shower on a chilly morning which led to his death.
The suspect, surnamed Yang, faces up to seven years in jail on a charge of negligence of duty, said Shunhe District Court in Kaifeng City, Henan Province, yesterday. He is accused of ordering guards to maltreat Mu Damin, 52, who was detained at the Kaifeng Re-education Center for bike theft in 2007, Henan's local newspaper Orient Today reported yesterday.
Mu was found dead on March 14, 2008 by three inmates, Li Xiaoyong, Wang Debao and another who insisted on anonymity. They claimed they saw guards spray a cold hose over Mu before he passed out.
Li and Wang said Mu was forced to strip naked in front of all inmates to show how "dirty and stinky" he was.
Guards then ordered two inmates to drag Mu to a tap and sprayed cold water on him, Li and Wang said. Wang said he saw a guard pinch Mu and prick him with a needle after he collapsed, but Mu did not react.
Li said Mu did nothing wrong that day but guards constantly bullied him. His body was sent to hospital where he was found to have suffered a brain hemorrhage. Inmates were told to keep quiet about the incident, the three said.
The court didn't hand down a verdict immediately, the newspaper said.
