Trio charged with bomb blast that killed 2, injured 15

THREE men, who set off a bomb outside a bank in a robbery attempt, killing two people and injuring 15 last December, stood trial today at the Wuhan City Intermediate People's Court in central Hubei Province.

Wang Haijian, 25, Wang Wei, 30, and Wang An'an, 26, were charged with the crime of setting off explosives illegally outside a bank office in Wuhan last December 1.

Prosecutors said Wang Haijian learned to make explosive devices from a website and invited two friends to join him in bank robbery last July.

The three hatched a plan and divided jobs. But Wang Wei and Wang An'an pulled out the last minute due to fears, leaving Wang Haijian to carry out the robbery alone.

Wang Haijian may face a sentence for life imprisonment or even death under China's Criminal Law, according to today's Guangzhou Daily.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people in Wang's home village signed a petition for lenient punishment for Wang Haijian because "he was a hard-working student and often helped villagers to repair their home appliances free of charge," the paper reported.

The trial is still ongoing.
