Trio jailed for killing teacher

THREE high school students in south Guangdong Province were given sentences of up to life imprisonment for killing their teacher who rebuked them for climbing a wall to catch up with their class.

Luo Yonghe, a student from a high school in Shunfeng Township, Meizhou County, was given a life sentence by a court in the county. Luo's two classmates Zhang Wenhua and Li Zhiming were sentenced to jail for seven and 10 years respectively, reported local Information Times today.

The three also had to pay 840,000 yuan (US$ 126,446) in compensation to the family of the victim, a teacher surnamed Zhou who was on guard duty at the school entrance in the morning.

The trio nursed a grudge against Zhou as Zhou didn't open the gate to let them in after the school bell rang in 2007. Their hatred escalated after Zhou scolded them for trying to climb the walls, which caused their lateness.

The students then decided to "teach Zhou a lesson". One day after school, they lured Zhou to a reservoir and killed him.
