Trip to plead for drug trafficker canceled
PHILIPPINE Vice President Jejomar Binay canceled a trip to China yesterday during which he was to make a final appeal for the life of a Filipino drug trafficker facing imminent execution.
Binay said he was notified by the Chinese Foreign Ministry it would not be "convenient" for him to visit at this time.
The 35-year-old woman was arrested in Hangzhou in January 2011 after heroin was found in her luggage. Her companion was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve.
Binay quoted Chinese authorities that the woman had trafficked drugs to China 18 times since 2008. The evidence against her was overwhelming.
