Trip to see quake ruins will cost less
SICHUAN Province's Beichuan County government has dropped a maintenance charge on people visiting the ruins left by an earthquake.
The 12 yuan (US$1.92) fee was blocked by a higher-level government body after the charge raised public questions, Xinhua news agency said yesterday.
But the county government will continue to charge 17 yuan for the 22-kilometer bus trip to see the damage caused by the 2008 earthquake that left nearly 20,000 residents dead or missing, Xinhua said.
The ruins, covering 35 square kilometers, include a new monument and the collapsed old town of Beichuan County. It has cost the government more than 450 million yuan to maintain the ruins.
