Troops in anti-terror exercises
CHINESE military personnel yesterday began the journey to Russia for anti-terrorism exercises with the host nation.
The transfer will be completed by August 2, according to Zhang Yan, deputy commander of the 646 Chinese military personnel taking part in the drills.
Chinese personnel will travel in seven groups - four by air and three by train, Zhang said.
With 72 people on board, two Mi-171 military transport helicopters and four Z-9 armed helicopters took off from Hailar in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region yesterday morning.
They will travel more than 5,000 kilometers with several stopovers, and should reach their destination in five days.
Meanwhile, 119 officers and soldiers set out by train at noon yesterday from the border city of Manchuri in Inner Mongolia. Two more trains were to follow.
Five JH-7A fighter-bomber jets will set out from Urumqi in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Wednesday and are expected to arrive in Russia the same day.
The exercises, dubbed "Peace Mission 2013" began yesterday and will run until August 15 in Chelyabinsk in Russia's Ural Mountains region.
Chinese military personnel taking part include an infantry combat group of 350; an air force combat group of 50; a logistics group of 196; a 20-strong planning panel; and a command unit of 30.
The joint drills are not targeting any third party, and are meant to enhance mutual trust and cooperation between Chinese and Russian armed forces, said Chinese command headquarters.
