TROPICAL storm Mujigae hit Hainan Province early yesterday, bringing downpours to the Wenchang and Haikou areas of the island.
The province's meteorological bureau said the storm landed about 2:20am at Longlou Town in Wenchang City, packing winds of 72 kilometers per hour in its eye.
More than 163,600 people were evacuated in the provinces of Hainan and Guangdong as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
No injuries or deaths were reported as of noon yesterday.
The office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said about 39,600 people had been relocated and about 26,100 fishing boats had returned to harbors in Hainan Province.
About 103,000 people had been evacuated and 38,600 fishing boats returned in Guangdong, and 21,000 people were evacuated and 9,500 fishing boats returned to harbor in Guangxi.
The storm has caused economic losses of 6.65 million yuan (US$973,788).
Flights resumed yesterday morning at Meilan Airport in Haikou. Hainan's capital, after 18 were suspended on Thursday afternoon because of strong winds and heavy rain, airport sources said.
All inbound and outbound train services in Hainan were still suspended, and the Qiongzhou strait line between the island and the mainland remained closed, said the Yuehai Railway Co.
No landslides or cave-ins have been reported along the railway line connecting Hainan and Guangdong provinces.
