Truck driver jailed, fined for Beijing bridge crash

A TRUCK driver was sentenced to three years in jail and fined 2.738 million yuan (about US$ 447,000) after he was found guilty for a Beijing bridge collapse in 2011, a Beijing court said on Wednesday.

Zhang Wenjun stood on trial for the second time at Beijing’s No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court on Wednesday after he appealed to have the previous judgement overturned which  sentenced him to four years in prison and fined 15.56 million yuan.

On July 19, 2011, Zhang, who is from Hebei Province, drove an overloaded truck filled with sand on to a concrete bridge in Huairou in Beijing’s suburbs, causing it to collapse.

Zhang was held responsible for the collapse of the Baihe Bridge because the truck he drove weighed 160 tons, which was above the limits.

He was sentenced to four years in prison for causing the traffic accident and was given a fine equivalent to the cost of the damage to the bridge by the Beijing Huairou Court in July 2012.

Zhang appealed in September, arguing that his truck was not responsible for the collapse and that he would never be able to pay such a hefty fine.

The case has stirred controversy as netizens suspected that the bridge had been poorly maintained, which may have been the real factor contributing to the accident.

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court insisted the bridge was in good condition before the collapse, but brought down the fine.
