Truck driver reports rip-off by rescue team

A truck driver was charged more than 60,000 yuan (US$9,126) for "rescue fee" in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province after his truck rolled down a hillside and was rescued by a traffic rescue team appointed by local traffic police.

Guangzhou Price Bureau received a complaint from the truck driver, Yang Gang, and was investigating the case, Jinghua Times reported.

The accident occurred on Highway G4 near the exit of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on February 13. Guangzhou traffic police went to the scene and called Xincheng Auto Transportation Service Company for rescue. After the work was done, the rescue team asked Yang to pay a bill of 60,719 yuan, including 45,000 yuan for the use of a crane.

Yang refused to sign the bill which he thought was too expensive. Later he went to the company's parking lot to pick up his truck, but was told that he could not get it until he paid the bill.

An official surnamed Wang of another rescue team in Guangzhou told the newspaper that according to local regulations, the fee for the use of a crane should be around 2,000 yuan. The charge may increase depending on the distance and tonnage, but the increase rate should be under 50 percent. Therefore, Xincheng Company's bill was "unreasonable high."
