A 10-YEAR-OLD girl was killed after a construction truck hit a scooter in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, on Friday evening, sparking public outrage as she was the 49th death blamed on accidents caused by construction vehicles in the city this year.
Hundreds of people gathered at the scene several hours after the accident, with some mourning the dead girl and some turning over cars, including two police cars, according to news website Xinhuanet.com.
A total of 700 policemen were dispatched to disperse the huge crowd of people blocking the streets. The driver of the construction vehicle was detained by police, the website said.
According to witnesses, the accident occurred at about 5:40pm on Friday when the truck, moving at a high speed, rear-ended a scooter, which was carrying a man and his daughter.
The truck didn't stop, running over the scooter with its rear wheels and then dragging the two-wheeler for several meters before stopping.
The girl, Xu Yueqi, died at the scene. Her father miraculously only had slight injuries, witnesses told the website.
The girl's parents held a mourning ceremony at the scene several hours after the accident. Hundreds of people gathered to block the streets.
In July alone, traffic police in Xi'an found that construction vehicles made 12,000 traffic violations such as speeding and running red lights after they installed GPS devices on the vehicles.
