Tse aiming to 'work things out'
HONG Kong singer-actor Nicholas Tse says he has begun attending to his domestic affairs in a bid to end speculation over his marriage to Cecilia Cheung.
He was hoping to ensure a quiet family life so that his "two sons can grow up in a healthy and happy way," he said in a statement issued yesterday afternoon by his agent, Mani Mok.
He apologized to family and friends who had been hurt by the rumors about his marriage or who had been harassed over the issue.
Tse said he would be making no further statements in the near future, and hoped "the public can put up with my silence toward the issue before I work things out."
At the end of the statement, Tse said "I'm deeply grateful for the contributions Cecilia Cheung has made in the past five years and I give her my best regards."
The showbiz couple got married in 2006.
Tse's statement came shortly after his wife had given a newspaper interview about their relationship.
On Thursday, Cheung broke her silence over the troubled marriage in an interview with Hong Kong-based Oriental Daily.
She said Tse had deliberately spread gossip portraying her as a greedy wife and cold-blooded mother in a bid to gain an edge in any future divorce proceedings.
Cheung told the newspaper it was Tse who had told Eileen Cha, a Hong Kong radio host, that the couple had disputes over property ownership and that their seemingly happy family life was a mere facade.
At the time, the actress was in the media spotlight for taking photos with Edison Chen on a flight, scenes that recalled the pair's involvement in an explicit photographs scandal in 2008.
Stories circulated that Cheung had been trying to have Tse sign over his properties to her and that she had even threatened to leave with their two sons.
Tse, in the meantime, was winning sympathy for his image as a tolerant husband.
"He really deserves the acting award he won," Cheung told the newspaper. "I had to rip off the mask he wore to reveal the truth of him." Cheung said her husband once told her he liked wearing sunglasses so that nobody could see whether he was lying or not.
During the interview, Cheung advised Tse to "stop playing the good dad" as he had never cared about their two sons - four-year-old Lucas and one-year-old Quintus. Cheung said Tse ignored the boys at home.
As to claims about Tse's assets, Cheung said she had never relied on her husband for a living.
"I could earn money on my own, which I am doing right now," the singer and actress said. "I will be fine even if I left the entertainment industry."
Divorce remains the last choice on her list, she said. Cheung decided to give the interview as she "had had enough."
