Tsinghua bows to public opinion by removing donor's logo

CHINA'S top-ranked Tsinghua University removed the logo plate of a Chinese fashion brand from a school building today after a heated online debate.

The university that just celebrated its centennial last month came into the spotlight on Monday after it named the building after Jeanswest, a domestic brand for casual wear.

It is a normal practice around the world for campus buildings to be named after a donor, but some blamed Tsinghua for failing to select a suitable brand because Jeanswest has nothing to do with education and made the campus too commercialized, one blogger said.

"The name can be accepted only when the donor is related to Tsinghua," said Wang Yunbin, a second-year graduate student in the Department of Water Resources.

"Tsinghua has the Meng Weimin Building. Meng is an artist and he donated to the art building. But what is the relationship between Jeanswest and our building? Even if it is a more famous or luxury brand, it still cannot be accepted," Wang said.

The debate heated up on Weibo.com after a picture of the logo plate was posted online. It soon attracted more than 90,000 comments. People started joking about the new name and took photos in front the building.
