Tuberculosis continues to plague China
CHINA has 1.3 million new tuberculosis cases annually, or 14 percent of the world's total.
Drug-resistant tuberculosis is also serious in China with about 120,000 new cases each year, accounting for one fourth of global cases, officials from the Chinese Tuberculosis Society said today as the National Center of Excellence on Drug-resistant TB Prevention and Treatment was launched in Shanghai.
Through cooperation between the Chinese Medical Association's TB branch and Eli Lily, a pharmaceutical company, six leading hospitals, including Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, will become model TB treatment centers in China. They will provide training in tuberculosis treatment and prevention to medical facilities elsewhere in China.
Tuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease. It can be fatal but can also be cured if detected and treated early.
