Twins recovered in baby-trafficking scandal as 2 health officials sacked

A PAIR of twin newborns have been recovered by police in the baby-trafficking scandal in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, bringing to three the number of infants that have been found, officials announced.

The twins, born in July in Fuping Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, were rescued by local police from neighboring Shanxi and Shandong provinces.

Also, the scandal has resulted the dismissal of the director and deputy director of the health bureau in Fuping County, following the removal of three hospital officials in connection with the case, local authorities announced yesterday.

Zhang Suxia, deputy director of the obstetrics department, is accused of selling the infants by deceiving their parents, telling them that the children had congenital diseases and convincing them to abandon the babies.

After the case came to light, Zhang, whose license has been revoked, was detained on suspicion of human trafficking, along with other five suspects. The hospital director and two senior officials were also dismissed.

Fifty-five similar cases were reported to the local police, including 26 cases in which Zhang was allegedly involved, according to Beijing Times.

In cases involving human trafficking, anyone convicted will be sentenced to no fewer than five years but no more than ten years, according to Chinese law.
