Two cops held for forced confession

PROSECUTORS in Henan Province detained two police officers for allegedly torturing a man into a confessing to murder that put him in jail for 11 years - until the alleged victim reappeared alive.

Three officers, Guo Shouhai, Zhou Minhan and Li Deling, participated in the torturing of Zhao Zuohai in 1999. Guo and Zhou had been detained while Li was still at large, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Zhao Zhenshang, the alleged victim, went missing after a brutal fight with Zhao Zuohai in 1999. Almost one year later, a headless body was found in a well and Zhao Zuohai was arrested for murdering Zhao Zhenshang and chopping up his body.

Zhao Zuohai at first insisted he was innocent but confessed after the police reportedly beat him up every day for more than a month. He remembered that police exploded firecrackers on his head, gave him drugs, and threatened to shoot him.

Zhao Zuohai confessed nine times until the police were satisfied. He said he made up all the stories, police not minding that some were contradictory.

The police later taught him sentence by sentence how he should speak in court. Zhao Zuohai said he didn't follow his lines, but argued for his innocence. But the court didn't believe him and sent him to death row.

Xinhua did not say what punishments the officers might face. But a judge with the Shangqiu Intermediate People's Court said justice would be quick and severe.

Zhao Zuohai said that after the sentence he lost the last shred of trust in the law and started his life behind bars with a dead heart. He said he feared being beaten again if he appealed.

Zhao Zhenshang, who was believed dead for 11 years, came back this month, alive and well.

He said he fled the village in 1999 because he thought he might have killed Zhao Zuohai in the fight.

After Zhao Zuohai's conviction, his wife remarried, three of his four kids were given up for adoption and his house collapsed.

Zhao Zuohai said he would seek compensation, and had been told 1.5 million yuan (US$219,500) is reasonable. He said he wanted to build a new house and find a wife for his remaining son.
