Two dead 'struck by lightning'
TWO people found dead on a rain-soaked road in Beijing on Sunday night are thought to have been killed by lightning, as the heaviest rainstorm in 13 years pounded the city for nearly two days.
The victims, a man and a woman, were found dead on a road in Shunyi District, according to a spokesman for the district government.
The northern Miyun District recorded 243 milimeters of rain in the 22 hours before 6am on Monday, said Wei Jian-min, chief forecaster of the Beijing Observatory.
He said the rain is important for replenishing Beijing's Miyun reservoir, which has so far been boosted to the tune of 17 million cubic meters.
The downpour had little effect on road traffic but caused problems for air and rail travel. According to Beijing Capital International Airport's website, 329 flights were canceled, and rail services between Beijing and Chengde City in Hebei Province were suspended after sections of the line were flooded.
