Two detained over death and robbery of reporter

TWO men have been detained on suspicion of killing and robbing a TV reporter in Luo-yang City, Henan Province, police said yesterday.

Li Xiang, a 30-year-old news reporter for Luoyang Television, was killed in the early hours of Sunday on his way home. He bled to death from 13 knife wounds. His wallet, camera, bank card and ID card were stolen.

At the time of his death, he was investigating the illegal production of swill oil in the city. He published his last microblog post on the subject last Thursday. Luoyang police said his investigation was unrelated to his death.

Two suspects were detained on Tuesday. Zhang Xiaobo, 28, was previously jailed for seven years for robbery and released in 2007. He and the other suspect, Li Junzhao, 24, are both local farmers.

Police said the two decided on Saturday night to rob someone. Before they robbed Li Xiang, they tried to rob a woman.

Li Junzhao is alleged to have followed the woman while Zhang waited nearby. For some reason Li did not carry out the robbery. But while Zhang was waiting, he saw Li Xiang walking alone on the street and followed him to his home.

Near Li's home, Zhang is said to have threatened him with a knife, demanding he hand over his bag. Li resisted and called out for help.

Police said Zhang was frightened and stabbed Li 13 times. He took Li's bag and fled, throwing the knife into a public toilet.

Both suspects were caught at Luoyang railway station on Tuesday night as they tried to leave the city. According to police, the suspects burned Li's bag, but his wallet and camera were recovered.

A friend of Li Xiang said the reporter was planning to get married next month.

Zhengzhou Evening News reported that Li's laptop computer was also missing but this has not been confirmed by police.

Li was working on a story about "gutter oil" - oil extracted from restaurant waste and reprocessed for illegal resale to restaurants.

Luoyang police said it was a simple robbery and money was the only motive. They said the suspects did not know Li Xiang and were not hired to attack him.
