Two dig tunnel to rob gem shop: cops

POLICE in Fujian Province said they have captured two suspected robbers who allegedly dug a 32-meter-long tunnel to a jewelry shop and stole more than 200,000 yuan (US$29,300) worth of gems.

The two allegedly confessed they had been working on the 2-meter-deep tunnel for more than one month since June. They also crawled through 25 meters of sewer.

Police of Jianyang City said one of the two suspects was an honored teacher in a local high school, Qilu Evening News reported yesterday.

The teacher surnamed Yu also confessed that he and his accomplice committed another tunnel robbery in the province's Wuyishan City.

Police said they have recovered most of the stolen gold jewelry, yet 20,000 yuan worth of jewelry has been sold or dispersed.

Yu carefully marked every meter of the tunnel to accurately reach the target shop.

Police said they found 134 bags of earth, several hoes and shovels in the tunnel 50 centimeters in diameter.
