Two officers held over torture

TWO police officers have been detained for torturing a man into a confession that jailed him for 11 years for murder, until the alleged victim reappeared alive and well.

Prosecutors alleged three officers in north China's Henan Province took part in the torture of accused killer Zhao Zuohai in 1999, Xinhua news agency reported today.

Guo Shouhai and Zhou Minhan are now in detention while a third officer, Li Deling, is still at large, the report said.

Alleged murder victim Zhao Zhenshang went missing after a brutal fight with Zhao Zuohai in 1999. Almost a year later, a headless body was found in a well and Zhao Zuohai was arrested for murder.

Zhao Zuohai insisted he was innocent at the first but he soon confessed after the police beat him up every day for more than a month, the report said. He said police exploded firecrackers on his head, gave him drugs and threatened to shoot him.

Zhao confessed nine times, spinning stories that were often contradictory, the report said.

He was sentenced to death, later commuted to 29 years in jail. He was freed on Sunday after the alleged victim reappeared in the village, and said he would now seek compensation for his wrongful imprisonment.
