Two officers jailed for torturing suspect to death

TWO police officers have been jailed in Jiangxi Province for torturing a suspect to death while trying to get a confession.

Nanchang Intermediate People's Court on Wednesday sentenced Deng Hongfei to 12 years in jail and Xia Xiangdong, chief of a criminal investigation team, to one year in prison. Two other police officers were also charged but escaped punishment, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Wan Jianguo died on August 8, 2008 after he had been taken into custody for his involvement in selling tainted human antibodies, which killed six people.

The six victims died between May 22 and 28 at the No. 2 Hospital Affiliated with Nanchang University after they were injected with tainted human immunoglobulin produced by Jiangxi Boya Bio Medicine Co.

Wan, a sales representative of Nanchang County Pharmaceutical Co, which sold the product, was taken into custody on July 5, 2008 to assist the police investigation, the report said.

When he died in custody he had scars all over his body, his wife Wu Peifen said.

The court said Wang was tortured by two groups of policemen for 17 hours before his death.

Police officers gave him electric shocks, hung him up, beat him with a wooden stick and hit his head against a railing, according to the report.

Nine officers were investigated in the case, but only four were charged. Wan's wife told the newspaper she will appeal the court's verdict.
