Two top cops held in Hilton crackdown

TWO senior policemen in Chongqing Municipality were suspended from their posts for allegedly protecting prostitution business run by a district lawmaker in the city's Hilton Hotel.

One of the officers was a district police chief and the other was a "hero cop" who was promoted two months ago for his contribution to the massive crackdown on the city's crime rings, today's Oriental Morning Post quoted a police insider as saying. He refused to reveal the duo's names.

Hilton Chongqing was temporarily shut down last Sunday when a police raid arrested 102 suspects there on prostitution and drug charges.

Among the suspects, 22 have been officially detained in the Sunday night raid. It was reported that Hilton Chongqing would reopen on July 6.

The report quoted anonymous insiders who said four police officers were among those detained in the raid. But Chongqing police refused to comment.

Peng Zhimin, a shareholder of the hotel and a district lawmaker, has been detained for his involvement with a crime ring that operated sex services and sold drugs in Hilton Chongqing.

The report said Peng was suspected of connection with other crime bosses during last year's crackdown on criminal organizations. He was not arrested then because he always kept a low profile and police had no evidence to implicate him.

Chongqing police gave him warnings but he refused to rectify its practice. Officers said Peng Zhimin gave the city's former police chief bribes worth 300,000 yuan in exchange for his protection.

Peng Changjian, 47-year old deputy director of the city's public security bureau, was sentenced to life in prison for taking 4.71 million yuan in bribes and conniving with the city's notorious crime rings.
