Two-day-old baby stolen from hospital recovered
A NEWBORN baby stolen from a hospital two days after his birth was found yesterday in central China’s Hubei Province, China Central Television reported.
A man and a woman were detained by police in Hubei’s Chongyang County.
The woman claimed that the man was her lover. She lied to him that she was pregnant. When the date for “delivery” neared she stole the boy from the hospital.
The missing boy was in good condition and will be reunited with his parents today.
A surveillance video clip from Tongcheng County People’s Hospital shows a woman, in her 30s, with her hair tied in a ponytail, running out of the in-patient ward with a baby in her arms. She left the hospital from the back door and rode out in a tricycle.
The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon when the baby’s mother went to the restroom.
The hospital’s deputy director, surnamed Cai, admitted a security lapse and the local police had offered a reward up to 50,000 yuan (US$8,205) for clues leading to the infant.
Police caught the suspect, surnamed Wang, and her lover in Chongyang County yesterday morning.
The male suspect, who is married and has several daughters in Chongyang, got involved with Wang when they worked in Shanghai.
He told Wang that he wanted a son. Police said Wang told him she was pregnant and decided to steal the baby.
The former vice president of Beijing Higher People’s court, surnamed Chen, told the Legal Evening News that Wang could be charged with child trafficking.
