Tycoon attacked by man seeking work

A SUSPECT has been detained by police after one of China’s richest men was injured in a knife attack in the eastern city of Hangzhou.

Billionaire beverage tycoon Zong Qinghou, owner of Hangzhou Wahaha Group Co, was attacked early last Friday near his home.

Hangzhou police said yesterday that the 49-year-old suspect was detained on the same day as the attack, in which Zong suffered injuries to tendons on two fingers of his left hand.

Police said the suspect, surnamed Yang, lived in Suzhou in neighboring Jiangsu Province. He borrowed 30,000 yuan (US$4,902) and went to Hangzhou earlier this year in the hope of finding a job.

Inspired by a TV program about Zong’s help for migrant workers, Yang went to the tycoon’s residence to ask for work. But when the tycoon turned him down, he took out a knife and attacked him, police said.

Zong was taken to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine for treatment, while Yang was caught by police at around 3pm in his rented residence in Hangzhou.

Zong, 67, has a personal fortune totalling 115 billion yuan (US$18.79 billion), according to the latest Hurun Rich List, and the Wahaha Group is one of the top 500 private enterprises in China.

It had modest beginnings in a humble factory affiliated to a primary school in 1987.

As the largest beverage enterprise in China, the group’s revenue in 2012 reached 63.63 billion yuan. It has 66 production bases and 170 subsidiaries across China and employs nearly 30,000 people.

Sources with the Wahaha Group said that the company’s business had not been affected by the incident. Zong was already back at work after his ordeal, they said.
