Tycoon defends boastful business card

A CHINESE tycoon who recently said that he was buying the New York Times has defended issuing a business card proclaiming that he is the “Most Influential Person of China.”
Cards made for billionaire Chen Guangbiao, who made his fortune in recycling, also claim he is ”China Moral Leader” and the “Most Charismatic Philanthropist of China,” among nine titles in English.
According to Chen, he received these business cards on January 1 and took them with him to the United States.
He held a press conference in New York on Tuesday and gave the cards to 17 reporters.
Chen said the nine titles he listed are honors he has received, complete with certificates.
“I asked a friend who has lived in the US for more than 20 years for his help in translating theChinese titles into English,” Chen said in an interview with People’s Daily website.
Rather than going to a professional translation service, Chen said chose his friend as he wanted to make sure the translation was authentic American English.
He admitted that he didn’t check the wording afterwards, due to his the lack of knowledge of the language.
Chen, CEO of China Huang-Pu Recyclable Material Salvage and Reclamation Corporation, has an estimated fortune at five billion yuan (US$825 million).
He is known for high-profile philanthropic acts, including handing out cash to people affected by the devastating 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province.
Critics say Chen goes to great lengths to generate public and media attention for his philanthropic acts.
Stunts conducted by Chen include selling “canned fresh air” to Beijing residents in 2012.
