Tycoon donates 1 billion yuan for temple repair
ONE of China's richest real estate tycoons has pledged to donate a record 1 billion yuan (US$150 million) to the government of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, for the restoration of a historical temple.
The contribution, the largest-ever personal donation in Chinese mainland, will make Wang Jianlin, chairman of Dalian Wanda Group, one of Asia's largest property developers, to become the nation's most generous donor, China News Service reported today.
Wang, the 16th wealthiest mainland Chinese in this year's Forbes Magazine, signed the donation agreement yesterday. His money will be sent to the China Charity Federation by December and the federation will transfer the funds to Nanjing government for restoring the Dabao'en Temple.
The temple, built in 1412, was destroyed in war in 1854. In August 2008, the finger bone of Gautama Siddhartha, the Buddha, was found among relics hidden in the basement of a ruined pagoda in the temple.
