Tycoon faces rape inquiry
A HIGH-PROFILE education entrepreneur is under police investigation for allegedly raping one of his interns and sexually harassing several other female staff.
Song Shanmu, 46, president of the Sunmoon Lifelong Education Group, is now facing inquiries in Shenzhen City in south China's Guangdong Province, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.
He was summoned immediately back to the city from his work in Beijing after a 22-year-old named Luo Yun called police to say she was raped on May 3.
Song allegedly lured her to his remote mountain apartment, but when they arrived threatened to kill her, raped her and took nude pictures, the report alleged.
Luo was a junior student in east China's Anhui Province and began teaching English at the company last year.
The report said police found bloodied towels at his apartment in Luohu District.
Song's lawyer Yang Lin said the matter could be a trap by industrial rivals and no conclusions should be made because it was "too complicated."
Authorities in Sunmoon's Shanghai branch said students were taking lessons as usual and the branch was not affected by Song's case.
Song established the Sunmoon Lifelong Education Group in Shenzhen in 1991 and expanded it into an international training company with branches in China, Japan, England and Canada.
