Typhoon Bolaven to bring huge waves to Chinese coast

CHINA'S marine forecasting agency today warned of storm surges and huge waves along the country's eastern and northern coasts as Typhoon Bolaven approaches.

The center of Bolaven, the 15th typhoon of the season, was located 525 km southeast of the coast of east China's Zhejiang Province this morning, said a statement from the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center.

The center issued a yellow alert for storm surges, calling for storm surges between 50 to 150 centimeters along the coast between Shandong and Zhejiang provinces.

The center also detected 10-meter-high waves in the East China Sea at 6am today.

The station maintained its orange alert on sea waves, saying from mid-today to tomorrow, the northern part of the East China Sea and the southern part of the Yellow Sea will see waves 9 to 12 meters high.

The center uses a four-tier color-coded warning system, with red being the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Tembin, the 14th typhoon of the season, remains likely to affect Fujian and Zhejiang provinces in next few days, as it is slowly moving northeast, the station said.
