Typhoon Fitow makes landfall in east China, leaving 2 dead

Two people have died as of early this morning as Typhoon Fitow hits east China's Wenzhou City, local authorities said.

Ni Wenlin, 55, from Dongtou County under Wenzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, died after strong wind blew him off a hill late Sunday night, according to Wenzhou Flood-Control Headquarters.

Ni was with other five people on their way to rescue a fisherman losing contact in a nearby port.

The other victim was from Longgang Township of Cangnan County under Wenzhou, said the headquarters.

Typhoon Fitow made landfall in east China's Fujian Province in the wee hours on Monday, packing winds up to 151 km per hour, the National Meteorological Center said.

The storm, the 23rd typhoon to hit China this year, landed in Shacheng Township of Fuding City at 1:15am today. It will continue to move northwestward but weaken quickly, said the center. Power supplies in part of Fujian have been cut off. A red alert, the highest warning, was issued for Fitow yesterday.

More than 170,000 people have been displaced and nearly 30,000 fishing boats were called back by yesterday. Eastern Zhejiang Province has also been affected by Fitow, with downpours and power cuts hitting many areas. At least 35 train services have been suspended in both Fujian and Zhejiang. Some flights between Taiwan and the mainland have also been cancelled.
