Typhoon Kestana Bears Down On Hainan

TROPICAL storm Kestana became a typhoon yesterday as it approached south China's island province of Hainan, the provincial meteorological station said.

The station said the typhoon was packing winds up to 110 kilometers per hour. The beach resort Sanya City closed all scenic spots, banned tourists from swimming in the sea and called 1,567 fishing vessels back to harbor.

Cheng Hong, deputy director of the city's flood control headquarters, said the city has prepared for a possible "frontal attack" of the typhoon. Forecasters said the storm's northern section might hit the island today.
