Typhoon Krosa warning upgraded

The National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center yesterday upgraded its wave warning from yellow to orange — the second highest in a four-tier warning system — after Typhoon Krosa strengthened to a strong typhoon on Friday night.

Krosa, the 29th typhoon of the year, is set to bring waves as high as 9 meters in the northern part of the South China Sea until noon today, the center said.

The typhoon is expected to whip up peaks of 3.5 meters in the Taiwan Strait and along Guangdong Province, while waves up to 3 meters will be seen in eastern areas of Hainan, said the center.

The center also warned of storm tides, with sea levels expected to increase by as much as 80 centimeters in Guangdong and Fujian provinces.

The National Meteorological Center issued a yellow alert for Krosa yesterday, as it moved toward China’s southern coast.

The NMC forecast Krosa will move westward at a speed of 10 to 15 kilometers per hour toward Hainan as it weakens.
