UK comedian to remake 'The Office' for Chinese viewers

A CHINESE version of the British hit comedy "The office" is on the way, said its producer on his blog.

Ricky Gervais, the 49-year-old British comedian and the TV series' producer, wrote last week that he and his team were about to create a Chinese version of "The office," which revolves around the life of a group of employees in a paper company.

The original sitcom was set in Slough paper company with Ricky Gervais himself playing David Brent, a regional manager described by his staff as "boss from hell" and a self-claimed philosopher, musician and politics fan.

The show was first aired as a 14-episode BBC TV series in 2001 and then spawned into a huge global success, as it has been remade into six foreign language versions for viewers in the United States, France, Germany, Chile, Canada and Israel.

Gervais also shot to global fame for his excellent performance as the boss David Brent, and has appeared as Michael Scott in the US version and Gilles Triquet in French as the show spread around the world.

Who will play the boss in China is not known yet, as Gervais revealed no more details.

"The Office" ran for two series in Britain, ending in December 2003 with two Christmas specials. Its American version is in its seventh season.
