UK man and Chinese wife get jail for bigamy

A BRITISH man was sentenced to jail for five months and his Chinese wife for four months for bigamy in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province yesterday, New Press Daily reported today.

The man, known by the pseudonym "Jerry," married his Chinese business companion Luo Ting, but local police said he had a wife and four children in the UK.

In September 2005, Jerry arrived in Guangzhou to work in international trade. He fell in love with Luo, who was reported to have known he was a married man, and soon they started to live together and addressed each other as husband and wife, the report said. Luo gave birth to two children in Hong Kong in 2006.

The man's British wife, known as "Marry," found intimate wedding pictures of Luo and Jerry when her husband returned to Britain for vacation in October 2006, the report said.

Jerry flew back to Guangzhou after having a big fight with Marry. In March 2012, Marry traveled to Guangzhou and reported the case to local police.

Jerry and Luo were convicted of bigamy early this year.

Due to their voluntarily surrender, Jerry and Luo were given more lenient jail sentences -- Jerry for five months and Luo for four months, though the court said they don't have to start serving their sentences for six months and five months, respectively.
